HOTS Playing Both Sides… Boston Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen became the first player in Major League Baseball history to play in the same game for both teams on August 26. ESPN reports Jansen took the field for Boston in the resumption of a rain-delayed game he started for Toronto in June—before he was traded to the Red Sox. But he didn't just play for both teams in the same game; he played for both teams in the same inning. Playing for Toronto on June 26, Jansen fouled off the only pitch he saw in the second inning before the tarps were called out. “Pinch-hitting for Danny Jansen: Dalton Varsho,” Red Sox media relations coordinator Daveson Perez announced in the press box before the first pitch on Monday afternoon, which came 65 days, 18 hours and 35 minutes after the game was suspended by rain, “Defensive changes: Danny Jansen now at catcher.” With Jansen behind the plate on Monday, Varsho struck out to complete the at-bat Jansen started. A tip of the cap from HOTS to official scorer Bob Ellis, who was also working the game when it started in June, for keeping this straight.
